Make Tornado hit damage instead of DoT damage

Tornado has the potential to be a phenomenal skill, I love using it. It's the most satisfying thing in the game to me.

But there is just not enough support in the game to make it work in a t15 waystone environment. The main areas of scaling are Spell Damage, Elemental Damage, Area Damage and Damage Over Time.

Since the ability is a DoT skill. It loses the benefits of many build defining spirit gems in the game. You can not use cast on elemental ailment, cast on critical, elemental invocation, and trinity because it does not do hit damage currently.

If we make it deal hit damage, it opens up the possibility of adding in another skill to the build that we can use for single target like bosses much easier. Currently, getting 3 ailments on the floor is a tedious process and requires a significant amount of button presses. Unless you automate a few things and that costs spirit.

Using all of that spirit to get ailment ground effects incentivizes you to get things like Sacred Flow in the Shaman ascendency tree. There's little point of getting all of that spirit if most of the spirit abilities don't trigger on tornado damage?

If you do not make Tornado deal Hit damage, I believe we should allow more abilities to proc off of DoT damage, or add more DoT damage support in the passive tree or through support gems to compensate for the lack of.

Mileage may vary, this is just my experience.

isnt it a phys dot so physical dmg scale it too?

It has Physical tag, along with AoE, Duration, Wind and Storm. Scaling with Physical damage should work.

You can do a pure tornado build and run T15+, im running that build now.

Majority of the damage comes from the ground effects that the tornado grabs. The physical damage scaling seems very weak in comparison to the elemental damage. It doesn't seem worth investing into.

Unfortunately, majority of the damage comes from elemental scaling through grabbing the ground effects. The physical damage is incredibly weak in comparison. Also, there is very little in the game now that works with wind or storm. Please correct me if I am wrong. I want to be haha.

There is one node that works with storm in the passive tree, which is absolutely taken.

What are you using to scale the damage? I'd love to hear it!

+ physical spell skills will scale all the damage
(ive tried physical spell damage and all that buffs is the physical part, not the elemental)
spell damage
and any of the elemental damage from the rings or lucky rolls on the staff.

I have tornado at lvl 33 and just the lightning is going 43k,

use wake of destruction boots for shock ground to add lightning

use Advancing Storm support gem so that youll always have lightning applied to the tornado

use elemental weakness with burning inscription to drop burning ground which would technically double your damage as soon as the tornado hits it and I run maps with ice patched to pick up the cold damage buff

Theres more to get more damage but thats the primary ways. Just got done running a few lvl 82 and the monsters dont melt like youde expect but they do die pretty quick. Ill drop elemental weakness when thers a rare to burn it down quickly.

The tornado is viable against armour broken enemies even without the elemental damage. It persists too so it would so I feel like it would be a little to OP if it also did massive damage while you used other skills. Paired with entangle's slows/maim, it's pretty much GG. I'm using it along with Paquate's Pact on Seismic cry with the Echoing Cry support gem to apply 10 stacks of Corrupted Blood immediately. There's also Bleed and chance to Impale with spells on my build. You can clear with just these lol
