Why I feel compelled to use a loot filter
|
A loot filter fixes 3 things for me (I use neversink presets with no sound):
1. Color coding different kinds of currency so I and determine what not to pick up. 2. Hiding low level base items so I don't need a wiki open to see whether I am looking at the top tier base. 3. Hiding bottom tier currency so there are not as much junk cluttering the ground when trying to pick up worthwhile loot. The baseline loot experience should be further improved to reduce the need to download a third-party loot filter. The loot filter situation should not be all or nothing. Players should not have to choose between "seeing a bunch of worthless drops" and "see exactly what you want and how you want to see it (customize everything)". The floor should be improved so that only the top 1% would feel the need to customize their experience. The goal should be economy-agnostic, preference-agnostic identifiable-at-a-glance nameplates and only dropping level-appropriate gear bases and items at T15 to reduce ground clutter and make most drops worth picking up for most players. 1. The baseline nameplates for currency should be updated to have more variety between the currency type and possibly also the currency sub-categories (like shards). Color coding currency allows me to quickly identify the items I see on the floor instead of having to read them (like a blue outline for essence, green outline for abyss items, etc). This makes it easier to intentionally ignore picking up items rather than needing to hide them because they all look the same. If I recall correctly, the base game has all the same coloring for all currency-type items, having the same beige nameplate. The coloring could be coded based on the drop chance such as mirror being a uniquely distinct color because the drop chance of mirror is so low. The coloring should not take into account the economy. Those that care about highlighting economically valuable items should then use a custom loot filter. 2. Base item drops (gear, jewelry, flask, etc) should have their drop restriction tightened so low level base items do not drop at endgame. Ideally, I would like to see only the top tier bases drop at T15. From what I can tell, at T15, the top 3 equipment of each type can drop (3rd, 2nd, and top tier ES glove base can drop). Since the top few body armour also have varying implicits, even more of those can drop. This is incredibly frustrating even with a loot filter because I cannot tell whether I have the best base item or the second best base item. I have to open the wiki to see what tier base I am looking at. Their base defense values can be masked by affixes and even then, I don't know how high I should expect the defense to be for the top tier base. 3. The item drop restrictions should also apply to currency. At T15, scrolls and the current 4 shards should never drop. Players should have plenty of gold to buy scrolls from the vendor. Players are also not scraping by to need shards to build up their supplies. They can disenchant for that. The lesser/regular runes/essences should never drop in T15 (I believe they already don't drop) similar to why the level-restricted abyss currency do not drop at endgame. These tiered currencies are intended for campaign progression and designed to reduce the need to hoard them until endgame. These should all apply to the base game experience. This should not need a customizable in-game loot filter. The base loot experience should be improved instead. Economy-sensitive coloring and custom sounds from Neversink's filters should remain as custom third-party loot filters. BONUS: In the distant future, a nice-to-have custom in-game filter would filter equipment to highlight drops based on broad categories like weapon type or armor defenses (ARMOUR/ARMOUR-EVA/EVA-ES/ES/etc). For example, if playing a standard Ranger, the player would open the filter and highlight specifically bows, quivers, and EVA bases, making it easier to see when a potential upgrade drops rather than looking at each drop to determine whether it even works for your build. For non-standard builds, players would still be able to select the drops they want to highlight such as quarterstaffs for a Warrior playing with quarterstaff skills.
