Crafting question - Perfect Essence

If I have +x melee skills on a weapon and I use a perfect Essence of battle, does it guarantee replacing the +x mod with +5? I'm guessing it does but maybe they did not want something so deterministic? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure trying to use it won't work since +skill mod is already on it. It should warm you it can't be used when you try.
