What happened to Engaging Combat? Video Feedback.
I don't know if it's already too late for the game to break free from it's past, but at the very least I know I've tried.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hk7fx9FM0rI I also want to mention that Dreamcore made a pretty good video on the topic, even if I don't really agree with his takeaway at the end of it. His conclusion is expected though... he is a PoE1 CC so of course he'd be more inclined towards that outcome, like all of them. But his assessments are correct for the most part. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkeVq5Jnqzg "Sigh" Last edited by IonSugeRau1#1069 on Sep 17, 2025, 2:31:18 AM Last bumped on Sep 23, 2025, 8:32:08 AM

it's just poe 0.5 with better graphic - and all engaging combat exist only in first two acts. Game just killing it's identity later

idk why this video is written in the past tense. things change league to league. anyway i think that ggg faces several challenges that contributes to this: 1. inexperience with engaging combat, they are ggg and not fromsoftware. 2. having many skills, passives, items, and skill support combinations leads to unintended consequences. 3. fickle playerbase that loves review bombing
i'll also say that even though you don't really "make a build" per se in dark souls/elden ring type games, i mean you do but it's super simplified, there are still ways to one shot bosses in those games using a variety of buffs. People don't do it though because it kind of defeats the purpose of even playing the game. in fact players usually go the opposite direction and make it harder for themselves. anyway at the end of the day it will be up to the players to make it as easy or hard as they want it to be for themselves. If you want to just hold down one button and zap through a level I'm sure you'll be able to do that and every league you'll be in here whining about how boring the game is. Or you can be normal and just run a kinda jank build that requires you to play a little more tactically and doesn't get you to 96 in 4 days. but honestly most of the boss fights are a lot of fun, i think GGG has done a great job. I think it's a little unfortunate that people want to skip the mechanics. Last edited by Cult_of_Resine#3258 on Sep 16, 2025, 2:56:53 PM

Some good points in that video, hope someone from GGG watches it (and reads my comment)

" Thankfully, I can make a comparison between my two experiences as I have played a few of those as well. I'll keep it somewhat short and simple, I've played both PoE2 and Elden Ring/DS3 with the same approach. Using logic and my assessment as to what would be powerful to use and play with as well as what I enjoy in terms of looks or feel. I've never looked for build guides or ways to one shot things. In Elden Ring/DS3 I always had challenging fights. In PoE 2 I trivialized everything, including boss fights. (Played bleed claws in ER, for reference) Most people don't run intentionally bad builds, most people will try to use their own logic to achieve success. The only time when I felt like PoE2 was genuinely a fair bit challenging was Act 1 of 0.1. A lot of people liked that as well. Since then things have gotten progressively easier and zoomier. "Sigh"

I am also a PoE1 enjoyer. I think PoE2 is feeling better in many ways, but it still becomes a "slog" and "exhausting". The reasons are changing, but somehow it feels stuck in this result. Now we have screen obliterating spam, almost constantly. The combat is now far more messy and obscure than anything PoE1 presents AND we have limits on our ability to manage the swarms on top of it (unless you play some meta crap). Abyss has compounded the issue even further. It's so obnoxious I just avoid it whenever possible..useless. While the game feels a bit more crisp when it comes to the ability to resolve attack pacing and movement speed, it still makes me say "when will this crap end???". Obviously that sort of experience won't bring me back for long and certainly doesn't make me want to waste my money on playing Hero Barbie. /shrug

There is no engaging combat. There is only Cavemans that run like superman and vanishing whole maps with Spear in few seconds while ruining the party's xp!
GGG DO YOU PLAYING YOUR OWN GAME? You can't be missed this unfair balance class... |

" Improved the video a tiny bit at the end with an example of how a good boss fight should look like. For that I showed a boss fight from V Rising which does a very good job when it comes to combat feel. "Sigh"

" Comparing a game where you can't build op shit, because there's is a very limited amount of upgrades and variations you can do, to a game where the passive tree alone has more nodes than V rising has items. Good job. Complexity understood -> no. |
