Why is Ghost Dance a duration gem?
|
This is inconsistent design compared to similar stage accumulation over time effects, and makes it one of two spirit gems that are made indisputably worse by sources of increased duration (the other being Time of Need).
Actually, while we're on this subject, why are there skills that are made indisputably worse by increased duration? Shouldn't it be more ambiguous, such as with cases like Frost Bomb where you have an argument for increasing the duration (exposure lasting longer) or shortening it (quicker kabooms)? And isn't this concern the main reason why Detonation Time as a mechanic exists separately from duration or why other accumulation over time effects ignore duration modifiers? The reason those gems are made worse by +Duration is because they are made better by -Duration.

That... fails to address several issues:
1) Why design skills in a way that they're fundamentally anti-synergistic with a common stat that the rest of the build might want, especially in the context of PoE2 pushing towards using multiple skills? I'm playing a monk right now that needs duration for the overwhelming majority of the skills I use, but that results in dropping an otherwise powerful defensive layer because it just so happens to pair TERRIBLY with a stat that my build would otherwise struggle without. 2) If the reason why it's worse with increased duration is because some skills are meant to be built with reduced duration, why does Detonation Time as a mechanic exist for the sole purpose of disconnecting itself from duration modifiers when it could've otherwise followed that exact same train of thought? And why do other similar spirit skills generate stacks based on a timer that can't be altered by duration modifiers? 3) Speaking of those similar spirit skills, why are Ghost Dance and Time of Need the oddly specific exceptions to the general principle that spirit skills granting buffs on a timer aren't affected by duration modifiers, and are therefore the only ones indisputably sabotaged by increased duration? The only spirit skill within this bucket that has a valid excuse for being tied to duration is Elemental Conflux, and it's because there's not really a clear assumption to whether you want its buff to cycle faster (less waiting, less uptime) or slower (longer uptime, longer downtime). 4) If the goal of reduced duration is to be useful in the right context, why not follow a design paradigm where going in either direction has some kind of argument in its favor? See my Frost Bomb example in my previous post and the justification Elemental Conflux has for being a duration skill. You can have a skill contextually want either depending on why you've slotted it in your build instead of having a skill only be royally screwed over by a stat that other skills in the same build might want. Ghost Gem is not the only negative duration gem in game.
You also have, In Time of Need, Frost Bomb, Explosive Lance, Earthquake and many others. Just take your time, read the gem and you will figure which benefit from support gems that increase duration and which benefit from effects that reduce duration. |

" ...Is anyone actually reading what I'm posting? Those are things I've literally addressed and explained my rationale regarding my feedback. " I've even mentioned the Detonation Time keyword and how it's disconnected from anything that alters duration altogether. Explosive Spear should not be on your list because its explosion delay is completely ignored by anything that would otherwise affect duration. You could quickly roll a brand new Huntress and test its interaction with Fast Forward or Persistence if you don't believe me. " Yes, I've been reading the tooltips and making sure I understand them as thoroughly as I can. That doesn't mean I have to like the skills as they are. Why else would I be posting feedback? |
