More base skill gem slots?
First, let me preface this by saying that I fully realize the default number of skill gem slots is supposed to create some level of friction that forces the player to make meaningful tradeoffs between active skills, spirit buffs, etc. and that there are technically ways to get more (giving up other ring implicits, playing a specific ascendancy). That said, I think the current number strongly discourages a key way in which PoE2 can and should innovate and improve upon PoE1: encouraging hybrid weapon and skill builds.
I came to this realization after playing the Huntress. Specifically, experiencing the "rhythm" of switching between melee and ranged combat and how well that goes hand-in-hand with avoiding boss mechanics that are easier to deal with at range or in melee range and using that to min / max up time on various debuffs and ailments. That was going well until I got to the end of the Huntress skills and felt more or less forced to choose between ranged spear throw skills and melee engage/disengage skills. Each felt good, but only in specific situations, making it more difficult than I would have liked to choose which skills to socket. Fast forward to my second build of 0.2, a bow Deadeye, and things just got worse. I was playing Poisonburst Arrow, which is a great all-around skill, but the downsides on many of the bow support gems which trade damage for improved clear made me feel forced into using two copies of the Poisonburst gem, one for clear and one for higher damage when bossing and killing rares. Of course this made "socket pressure" even worse. I then realized how amazing it would be to weapon swap between the spears+bucklers from leveling my Huntress and long range bow skills, which is sort of impractical at this point due to socket pressure. I really want to stack bleed from the spear skills with poison from the bow skills and synergize the parry debuff with farshot type bow buffs! (Obviously there are balance considerations here, but this partially takes care of itself by requiring a balance of weapon specific passives on the skill tree.) In summary, I think PoE2 would be a lot more fun if it leans into encouraging weapon swapping and situational combos of abilities across weapon types. I think there are a lot of potential solutions to the socket pressure which mostly seems to prevent this now ("weapon set" skill slots which swap in and out with weapons, access to an extra slot or two extra slots on the passive tree, explicit mods that add slots, etc.). I am curious if others have tried meaningful weapon swap setups and if socket pressure was a similar issue. Last bumped on Apr 15, 2025, 5:38:18 PM
