The Announcement on what GGG is working on - Large Area Sizes

Large Area Sizes
Many players are reporting that areas feel like they are too large. Normally when this is the case, the main reason is due to other concerns such as monster life or player damage being incorrect, or just a lack of entertaining content in the area. However, we are checking to see if there are any outliers that players are spending too long in to see if any changes to area size need to happen.

In the meantime, we did notice that there are some areas that don't have sufficient checkpoints, so we are doing a pass of adding some more of these.

You're overlooking the true concern.

The dilemma isn’t just about too little content, it’s how annoying it can be to pinpoint the Important Spots on various maps. It takes ages. A lot of the time, you’re simply battling random enemies for no reason, and they give you nothing to progress. The main goals on the campaign map is to find and beat the big boss or to snag rewards from an Important Spot or side boss. Common foes? They mainly serve as experience fodder.

Stuffing more material in these zones doesn’t resolve the main concern. Sure, it might be enjoyable during your first trip, but once you have it figured out, the whole thing becomes a drag. Repeating the same vast campaign maps gets old quickly. It shifts from being a game to feeling like a duty you gotta grind through just to reach the “final stage.” And for that, the Map Size is the big culprit.

Take Spires of Deshar as a glaring example.

Initially, you must be in Deshar to discover the remains of a deceased woman, which is already an annoying hassle. Then, when you actually reach Spires of Deshar, you must hunt down the altar to gain that vital 10% lightning protection. You can’t avoid it, it’s essential for advancing. But finding it? There’s no help, no clues, just pointless wandering.

So now you’re bogged down doing both Deshar and Spires, and the entire procedure consumes way too much time. It’s not hard, it’s just monotonous. Plus, because there’s no sign showing where the quest target or Important Spot is, you waste time sifting through large, empty spaces filled with creatures that don’t give you anything useful.

If you aren’t going to provide players with better guidance, at least think about cutting down the map size.
