The early game gameplay has been complete dogshit and that seems like a common opinion. Why do so many attacks require Frenzy charges this early with only one way to generate them, and that being a two-step defensive combo? Why is there a literal 5 skill combo to get one decent attack off in an ARPG, let alone in the very first act?

I league started with Monk last time and it wasn't nearly as bad with Falling Thunder. And then you got Ice Strike and popped off. However, every spear skill has been some unfun nonsense. It's like the person who keeps making all these support gems with crazy conditionals and downsides got promoted to making skill gems.

I'm slogging through act 2 right now and I can't decide if I want to go back to Phrecia or reroll.

Playing spears feels like leveling from scratch on Torment 6 in Diablo 3.
Yeah I have no idea how they thought this was acceptable. Anyone who has touched an ARPG for more than 30 minutes in their life could flag at least 5 serious gameplay issues before they even get halfway through act 1. The worst part is how much work you need to do to get anything approaching decent DPS in comparison to other classes/weapons. Literally what is the point of making me do a giant combo when I can just use any other weapon and get the same DPS on one button?
+1 comically bad to the point that I'm convinced not a single person at GGG actually loaded up the game locally and tested out any of these abilities at low level. Skills that are literally a dps loss over auto attacks? Bro...

Poe2 was never meant to be like any other ARPG.
Impatience is insatiable.
The only thing that felt decent was the lightning spear and that is just like a ranger, only worse. I don't see why the other spear has to sit in the ground for 30 minutes before it explodes. If you notice (everything but lightning), it feels like everything takes 30 minutes to work. GGG, do you know some tips that explode on contact?

What's the point of this post? There's no issue with trying to be different. There is an issue with being deliberately antifun.

I would love to see a GGG dev playing high tier maps with spear skills. Show me how that methodical combo based gameplay is working out in the endgame.
