Exp penalty is redundant and obsolete

TLDR: Now that we only get 1 portal per map the exp penalty is redundant and straight up overkill in terms of punishing the player.

When asked specifically about the experience penalty on death in PoE 2 on the live stream today Mark says that his view on the topic "May not be the right way of looking at it." When he turns to Jonathan, the first thing Jonathan says is "right now there are too many penalty axis". Jonathan then goes on to explain all the negative consequences of dying in maps and how ultimately the exp penalty is "adding insult to injury." A developer is now on record saying that the exp penalty is too much.

Experience penalty makes sense in PoE 1 because we have 6 portals per map.

Experience penalty does not make sense in PoE 2 because we have 1 portal per map.

Every single argument in favor of having an experience penalty is accomplished by having only 1 portal per map.

"experience penalty makes higher level content more meaningful" - so does having only 1 portal

"getting to level 100 should be an achievement" - it is. especially since the entirety of the end game level grind is accomplished in maps, which only allow 1 portal.

"the experience penalty means you actually have to optimize and not die" - so does only having 1 portal

"the experience penalty prevents players from 'punching above their weight'" - so does only having 1 portal

"choices should have consequences" - the consequence is the portal closes and you lose a map, and the league mechanic, and any items on the ground, and you can brick the atlas.

What they want is to keep the penalty and 1 portal.. they're both pretty adamant about that.. what they want to change is being able to keep the league mechanics instead of losing them.. but they are not sure how to do that without it being abused over and over.

That's still not fixing people exiting the game after dying once which is funny. They'll have to cave in or face the reality that no one will play the game.

Except, I don't exit the game after dying and I know none of my guild do either.

That is a small fraction of people since it was not even addressed in the stream today.. if that was such a problem something would have changed.
"I dont see it so it doesnt exist"

People absolutely do ragequit after dying, especially if it’s to a bs mechanic that had nothing to do with their skill level or the quality of their build. You can have the tankiest build around and clear entire screens with a single button press but still get one shot by the most ridiculous things. Having that happen is already frustrating enough without GGG punishing you further. The current penalties are overkill and akin to pulling out your nails then soaking your fingertips in acid only to then cut your hand off too. The only people putting up with it are those who have played PoE for years and have become used to the abuse GGG hurl at them. Google Stockholm Syndrome, it will be illustrative.
Welp its staying in the game. Up to you what you want to do with that information

You know. When you respond to someone saying 'others will leave' with a comment saying "yeah, but I don't leave'. Do you not realize how you paint your entire view on this, from a personal perspective?

Tons of people leave because of this mechanic. Less than 10% of players ever get out of the acts and into mapping because of it.

You don't? Okay, that's good. Now what about the millions of other players that HAVE?
