Linking to Steam account with an already existing character

I'm trying to link my actual account to my Steam one but I forgot that a couple years ago I also made a separate account there. I am now attempting to link the two together and I'm getting a warning saying that one of the accounts will be permanently gone. This is what the message looks like:

You will not be able to merge any further accounts with the same login methods () to this Path of Exile Account.

Does this mean that my account (this one) will be retained and the steam one will be deleted or is it the other way around? I want this one to stay but I'm concerned that the reverse will happen and I will be stuck with an account with barely any progress in it.

Would appreciate the help! I sent a mail to support in December but haven't gotten a reply yet so I'm hoping posting here would yield better results.
