Mercenary: When you switch ammo it should reload also

Irl I don't think anyone would first insert an empty clip before reloading. But that's what we have to do in Poe2. If i go from one type of ammy to another, and the ammo type I'm switching to is on zero, I still have to reload the newer ammo. It's clunky, it doesn't make any sence, I hope it can be changed. Thank you.

The game simply do not encourage you to switch ammo to begin with. AP then HV? Spam HV is way more effective somehow. Freeze then shatter? Oh is that more effective than just ice herald?

Crossbow is rushed, no doubt. It’s just a worse bow with inferior skill set and inferior damage. Maybe with the only exception of explosive bolt three dragon double herald combo but then deadeye does that better than mercenary.
that's a good point. crossbow shot would feel a lot better if it was smoother I think. less downtime, more pew pew pew
Currently the best way to play multiple crossbow ammo types is to use weapon swap for each ammo type with the attack buttons on left and right click. A little clunky but I think this design is what witch hunter is based around. I am not sure it succeeded or was made clear to players that this is the optimal way to swap ammo.

There are a few mechanical changes I would make to crossbow.

When the last bolt of a clip is fired, you automatically begin reloading instead of waiting until the next attack input. This is the expected behavior in shooter games so having the delay of reloading after emptying the ammo count is jarring and likely a big reason people are noticing jank.

Change the ammo skills to fire their bolt type like grenades currently do.

Change the fire crossbow skill to a Reload skill that reloads the last used ammo skill. Reload time is reduced for partial reloads up to a cap.

Change Emergency Reload skill to reload all ammo skills.

Give witch-hunter ascendancy the a node that allows you to reload while dodge-rolling and add a unique glove that gives other classes the same ability.

Make Cluster Grenade a meta skill so we can fire off multiple grenades at once. Nobody uses it as is.

Being able to toss out oil and gas grenades with one button would be a huge QoL improvement.
Crossbow feels clunky as fuck and I main mace warrior. It def needs some help before I bother playing merc.
