Leveling my gems should give me power, not mana chores
|
So when I level a gem its mana cost gets bumped like 30% or so at some levels? Which leads to instead of feeling more powerful, now I can cast less spells! Why? Mana should be solvable with few nodes and a flask not 99% of your tree. WHoever made that decision to make mana costs that high should really go back to their toilet cleaning job and not into game development.

With great power comes great responsibility.
There absolutely should be a cost associated with being stronger. |

you get both!

I'm actually ok with what the OP say.
If you don't play on top of the tree, there is absolutely 0 mana nodes (look, there is none, nada, not a single one, you have a mana flask node, which is worse than an Fine Belt.). If you play as mercenary, getting your skill to only level 23 with 3 to 4 (if corrupted) link gets you a hellish cost on ammunition reload of around 230 mana for a couple shot, i'm playing gemlings, I have like 750-800 mana-ish with correct investment in intel ? So unless you make a screen cleaning build (which is hard to do because the bottom tree is complete garbage) with high roll mana gain on kill on every possible gear, you have no way to sustain efficiently. I did a screen wipe mana gain on kill on every possible gear, if I misuse 1 or 2 loads, I have to chug that mana potions as fast as I can or I get wipe by those white trash mob that hit at 2.5k damage with their 600% movement speed (I'm playing armor/evasion, capped all res, 50% PREDICTED physical mitigation and 79% chance to evade hits, still getting one tapped by instant on death effect like Detonate Dead or things like that, and yes, I made it to t15 and I even consistantly make it to last boss in sanctum) It's a real problem when you don't start at the top of the tree, and I made a reroll just to be sure (and yes, mages and witch just roll on the game, facetanking everything, ES is absolutely broken but it's also mandatory since there is no alternatives, if they nerf ES, a lot of people will just stop playing, since dying to a white trash mob is not fun and 1 portal xp+loot+map+mecanic loss is way too much. I'm fine with the XP loss, but the other three ? Not a big fan, since maps are already trash.) |

I quite like the system in principle. Yes you want to upgrade your gems, but you also need to ensure you can sustain them. In practise it feels awful to realise you can no longer use the gem you just levelled up because either the mana cost suddenly became prohibitive (and some of the jumps are huge) or the Stat requirement took a jump which the game didn't warn you that you don't meet.
Sure with practise you learn to double check before upgrading any gem but still, a warning would be nice. I upgraded my Shield Charge which it looked like I could still use, only to find my 2H had Str bonus which my S&S didn't have. Partially exacerbated because my 1 handed mace had +4 to melee while my 2H only had +3. So I had enough Str but only when wielding my 2H mace which is... suboptimal :o). I had to make a new gem to fix it as I didn't have spare Dex or Int nodes to swap to Str. But, at least these things seem a lot more fixable in POE2 than they were in POE1. It would be nice if they added a way to downgrade gems. Had this happened on a gem I had improved Quality on it would have been quite disheartening. " To be honest, 27 lvl skill, is like how much? 50% MORE damage? You are essentially getting unconditional 7 link. I one-shot every magic and some rare mobs thanks to this. With "X mana gained on kill" or "mana leech" you should be ok. Something interesting - this actually allows me to one shot bosses. And no, without this extra damage, it is not "you are going to two-shot them", because I have to wait for cooldowns, and then it is not that simple. So yes - dumb people should suffer. But this mechanic is broken good right now. If anything the mana cost should be increased even more. |
