Bleed Damage

I am currently leveling as a Bloodmage focusing on applying Bleeds, and I've noticed that the Bleed text states it bypasses energy shield, but I am actually unable to apply Bleed to any target that has energy shield active.

I am curious if I'm missing something somewhere stating I shouldn't/can't apply Bleed to targets with energy shield, or why there are no damage numbers appearing on bosses if I let their energy shield refresh while a Bleed is on them.

Not sure if this is a bug or working as intended but I thought I'd post about it.
