Hey guys, how does "Increased elemental damage with Attacks" works?
So I have a new Quarterstaff, it doesn't have any elemental damage on it but it has that line.
The stats as follow: " I'm playing Lightning + Crit monk which makes me think that this staff is perfect for me. But the more I read on the internet about how damage scaling works, the more I become confused. Some people said that the "elemental damage with attacks" line is now not working because my weapon don't have innate elemental damage on it. Some said it will add once my physical damage is converted to lightning because Monk's attack skills that convert 80% physical to lightning. Also I became more confused because I wanna put a rune on it but I dont know if I should go full physical (Iron Rune), elemental damage with attacks (Soul Core of Citaqualotl), or flat additional lightning damage (Storm Rune)? Can anyone shed a light on me please? Last bumped on Dec 23, 2024, 5:58:41 AM

ok, ill try and help but this is a lot of poe1 knowledge. if anyone knows this is wrong now in poe2 jump in and correct me.
but the way this works in poe1, where you can get these exact stats. the elemental damage with attacks roll is a global modifier, its not local to the weapon. if you convert your physical damage to elemental this will scale that damage and be additive with all your other sources of % increased damage. so if you have 100% increased damage with quarter staffs, 100% increased attack damage and 100% increased elemental damage with attacks you will have a total of 300% increased damage being applied, presuming that all of your damage is elemental attack damage. if only 80% of your damage is being converted then the elemental bit will only apply to that 80%. i cant be certain what the best rune for you is but i would think it would be the % physical damage runes because they will scale the base damage of the staff you already have, which is really high. if it was my staff, and it looks like a nice staff so gg, i would put iron runes in it for sure, and then i would use blacksmiths wetstones to take it to 20% quality. because you are converting the physical to elemental you just want to max out that base physical damage coming from the staff which is the source all these multipliers will be working on. I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

good question. I am not sure either, in POE 1, all modifiers to physical damage applied before conversion to elemental damage after which elemental modifiers applied to the portion of damage converted.
But when you red the contextual hint (when you click on underlined text in skill description) it now says that modifiers are not applied before conversion. Based on that how it should work is to apply the added damage, then convert % of the damage to elemental damage based on the skill you are using, plus possibly items and talents and then apply the 86% from your staff to increase the elemental portion of the skill, while the 55% would only apply to unconverted damage. I could be wrong on that, but you can see for yourself when you look at the detailed skill description (hit G then click on the arrow on the right side, it will show you what damage of what element are you doing with it) |

" the 55% is local, its not a global 55% increased physical damage. its 55% increase on the physical damage of the staff itself. so if a white version of the staff has: 70-102 physical damage showing at the top. the 44-59 phys damage gets added to that so we get 114-161 physical damage then the 55% increased physical damage multiplies that, so we get 177-250 physical damage i dont know the actual numbers cause i dont know if he had quality on the weapon which would effect it. but thats the way local modifiers work, those all just work internally within the item itself to give the total flat physical base damage the staff does on hit. that new rule about modifiers not scaling converted things is definitely a thing but thats global stats. so if he gets % increased physical damage on the passive tree or a ring etc thats scaling the global physical damage his character does it will only apply to the 20% unconverted. this is all afaik btw, anyone knows different please come in and correct me. i think the iron runes will be additive with the 55% local. so instead of the above what we would get is: so if a white version of the staff has: 70-102 physical damage showing at the top. the 44-59 phys damage gets added to that so we get 114-161 physical damage then the 95% increased physical damage multiplies that, so we get 222-313 physical damage and then if we presume it has 0 quality currently, the 20% quality will be an extra multiplier on its own, ending up with 266-375 physical damage if he already has quality on the staff then all these numbers will be a little off, but the general theory i think holds true.
