Impossibly Difficult…HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!

I am once again stuck at the Act 1 Final Boss Fight. I have attempted this as a witch and now a ranger. I have watched countless videos about builds for both. I have spent hours trying to defeat him. I have beat all other bosses to this point on the first attempt with the exception of the king of the mists. It took me roughly 5 or 6 attempts to defeat him. I am pretty much ready to delete this game. It is no longer fun. It’s very frustrating. How is it possible for me to defeat every boss to this point…but not be able to beat this boss and move on to the second act. I could see if this boss fight had a couple of phases…but this is ABSOLUTELY F*****G RIDICULOUS!!!! I’m not a pro player, but I’m pretty capable. I could see if I had difficulties with many of the bosses or if I was the only one having problems with this fight…but that is not the case. And the drops are ridiculous. Minion fights taking quite some time to defeat, especially when multiples gang up on you…and they drop 50 gold?? How are we to acquire decent gear to be competitive when rares rarely ever drop and if they do, they are items my character does not utilize. And you want us to craft? How about dropping some good orbs to do so. This game is really beautiful and challenging and for the most part, enjoyable…but being stuck at the end of the act unable to move on is…GAME OVER!!! Please, for the love of everyone, do SOMETHING about this boss fight. I would love to keep playing to see how the rest of the game plays out, but I cannot. Thank for your time.

Can you record your fight and upload it on youtube? That way it's easier to point out what you're doing wrong.

Take a break so that you're not on a tilt, first. For all you know a good night's rest and you'll beat it in one shot tomorrow, that's usually how it goes for me when I struggle with something for a couple of hours.
First tip: Check your cold resist. Try to get as much as it as you can. His most punishing mechanics tend to key off of cold damage. You can talk to Renly in town to peruse his items and see if any have cold resistance. There's also Una who might sell a sapphire ring for more frost resistance. You can try gambling for more cold resist on any item you're wearing that lacks a suffix by using an orb of augmentation on it. They're worth using anyway if they only have one modifier, you could get life or more damage to make the boss fight easier. I've only played as melee, so I don't know the suggestion for what supports to use on what spells. But for avoiding his mechanics, I find the comets (the white lines that drop frost AoEs a second later) are easier to dodge by just moving, not using dodge roll. Second, when he goes into into the mist as a puppy and charges at you, his charges are in synch to his voice lines. You can use that as the guide for when you need to dodge roll to the side. |

For gear I'd say you should try to max cold resistance, using whatever you can. The charm, some cold resists from augmenting gear, even if it's not the one you wear. That is, pick from Renly some energy shield gear and maybe hp and if it doesn't have cold, try to to get it with some orbs of augumentation. You could also consider using the socketing orbs, to punch some holes into your gear and add some cold resist runes.
Combat wise, minding your step is quite crucial. Don't fight next to the sword he drops in the first phase. Try to keep away from frozen ground so as to not empty your charm too early. During cold beams (comets, as Amorencinteroph calls them), you'll notice that one always drops on your current location, so aside from walk (not rolling, as it's too slow) out of the way, try to not circle black there. Lastly, I'd say to try and not panic-spam attacks, cus you might get caught mid-animation during some of the boss'es most devastating skills (like the dive bomb). On my first playthrough I too have struggled with the count. But his attacks are predicatble and if you have enough (~45 or so, I'd say) cold resist, you should have a much easier time fighting the guy. And also, don't play angry. Anger is a conduit for mistakes :D |

My assumption when someone says they follow a guide is that they forget to actually spec into one type of armor resistance and stack up decent cold resistance, following only set of skills and gems.
In all your rage you wrote, you didn't inform us anything about your gear for this fight. Did you actually focus on one type of armor at all pieces? Did you stack up decent cold resistance? Did you make sure your gear is best you could find? Because you don't need rare items for this act. Blue is enough but you gotta keep up with base stats. Imo early on even on witch, especially if you are just starting, armor with energy shield combo is best. Make sure to dismantle all blue gear you find to simply roll for decent base stats with added extra armor + ES on top. There is nothing else really needed. Cold resist + decent set of blue gear and using your dodge and attack skills correctly when fog starts. Mobility is key. If you get trapped in his ice spike wall attack, just smash the spike and escape with roll before he finishes. When fog starts during his wolf phase, dodge roll after each line of poem while circling around and focusing adds. If he teleports expect the red aoe physical attack. Keep rolling then. Everything else is visible and easy to dodge. I had 3 playthroughs on campaign and even on first one I didn't fail. But then again I always made sure to have my armor updated and wear 2 cold resistance rings. Also ye, don't get greedy with attacks and keep chill. Anger won't be your ally here. twitch.tv/unik0rnu Last edited by Unik0rnu#9262 on Dec 22, 2024, 6:26:42 AM

Thank you for the replies. I apologize for my frustration rant. I tend to be very competitive and a perfectionist. This game is different from POE and they are both different from the types of games that I usually play. I have finally beat him several times. I have spent a lot of time farming for resources and upgrading gear. I’ve reached end game with 2 of my characters…I have a level 75 Deadeye Ranger and a level 76 Infernal Witch. I have been putting notes and strategies to paper for reference. I also have a list of tips started that I would love to put in a video for new players. I would hate to see players give up and quit the game. I love puzzles and this is somewhat of a puzzle, having to balance out gear and resistances for the challenges faced. I have also taken breaks to come back fresh and that usually helps. Thank you again for taking the time to reply to me!

Hard to guess what you are doing wrong. I have not tried a ranger, but I was able to beat him with a warrior at first try, so I think that ranger should be easier.
Are you running out of HP Flask or Mana Flask? Are you being one shotted? What part of the boss fight is the main problem? The mist part? Are you dodgerolling correctly? Are you using skills that he is resistant against? You didn't shed much light onto the problem. |

I had the same problems with ACT bosses, but I found a hilarious solution: buy your gear! Trust me, with enough DPS, you can breeze through bosses without fussing over their tedious mechanics.
In all my 284 levels played, I always buy my gear because, let's face it, I never seem to find it! |

" That's a solution, but hardly in act 1, where you have almost no currencies. The act 1 boss is one of the easier ones. There is surely something he is overlooking and doing wrong. EDIT: But he is not on a first playthrough and possibly not as an SSF. I play SSF almost all the time so I can make "wrong" assumptions here. Last edited by Puliver#7825 on Jan 24, 2025, 3:14:57 AM
