Why is Essence Drain so bad?
Seriously, why does this skill carry over all of its downsides from PoE 1? It doesn't appear to even drain any life from enemies as part of the spell anymore, so maybe the name should be changed to 'Slow Bolt'.
The spell came with hefty downsides originally to make you pay for natural lifesteal - namely being very slow moving, having no piercing naturally, and also having a tiny hitbox. So now we come to PoE 2 and what do we get? All of the above downsides, no lifesteal, and crushingly massive negatives if you try to fix said downsides. Playing this skill just feels bad. You're constantly trying to maximize both the hit and the dot if you can. I would suggest the spell be doubled in movement speed, maybe some innate pierce? The target tracking of soulrend from PoE 1 would be nice, too. Why is it Chaos Bolt, a zero mana free cast spell on a wand, feels infinitely better than this hot garbage? Please do something about the spell, we need options besides just Hexblast and this slow cumbersome spell makes it that much harder trying to set up combos with other DoTs when it's so slow without target tracking or the life drain it's LITERALLY named for. Conversely, to stop the need for the DoT or the Hit to exclusively buffed I would suggest that the DoT be based on 100% of the damage the bolt deals per second instead of being a separate instance of damage.
That way if the initial hit crits the DoT also gets a boost. And maybe rework the non-ailment chaos dmg support gems that just boosts the DoT. Alongside a support gem that allows us to heal Energy shield based on the highest Nonbleed DoT your skill gem is currently dealing. |

" Because it's not essence drain. Essence drain implies some sort of draining happening. You get nothing, no leech, no essence of any sort from the victim. It's some random bolt skill that they slapped essence drain name on. |

" This. And almost as bad is that its sibling went from being aoe to a single target effect whose best use is poison prolif, not ED/non-ailment chaos dot spread. And that projectiles have random terrain based isometic displacement to the left/right of the screen, something that was already resolved in the 90s. |
