Ghostwrithe tattered robe working with CI

I noticed that the Ghostwrithe tattered robe gives me 737 Energy Shield with nothing else equipped.
My character has 50 life from runes, no Energy Shield nodes allocated on the tree, Chaos Inoculation, and Beidat's Hand. It seems like the life is being converted to Energy Shield before Chaos Inoculation applies.
