So is Atlas really endless?!?

I`m a new POE player (only tried POE1 for a few days) and recently saw the POE2 EA presentation.

I was so thrilled for the entire video, until I heard that the Atlas is Endless. Like, seriously??

My opinion is that this is very discouraging and the game looses a lot from it`s meaning because of that. I mean, does any endless thing in this world have any purpose? What`s even the point to start playing, since I`ll be stuck in an endless activity!?

I hope I`m wrong though and the Atlas is actually a big map which you can finish exploring (all dungeons, etc), then go to / open a second one, then a third one, etc. So still endless in a way, but gives a lot more meaning to the activity. You finish a map, then you have some kind of counts to see how many Atlases you finished so far.

did you play d2? Did killing Meph endlessly have a purpose?

Let me rephrase.

Does pulling the slot machine arm on a slot machine have a point?
