Smite skill + impale

Does smite Impale? tool tip says yes, but I cant see a debuff icon or the visual effect. If it does impale, does the lightning portion of the skill impale, or just the melee hit portion?

only physical damage can impale. typically you would want to convert all your damage to lightning to scale the damage better
