The current state of betrayal
Hi, now that necropolis is coming to a halt i want to take the time to talk about the current state of betrayal. As a long time betrayal enjoyer i really didnt enjoy this league. This is purely my opinion and probably will not reflect the broader playerbase's opinion.
Betrayal has a long history of being only viable to play if you are selling on TFT as the main profit would come off of the crafts provided by members like hillock, vorici and aisling. Due to some shady things happening on TFT, GGG started to reduce players reliance on it. With this in mind and GGG's latest trend to streamline gameplay brought a whole lot of nerfs to Betrayal. These nerfs started with Leo no longer granting craft-only exalted orbs back when they were the "main" currency. Not long after, the amount tiers of Breachstones were reduced from 4 to 2, due to which "IT that fled" would no longer be able to upgrade breachstones. With this league the remaining crafts have all been replaced so Betrayal is finally fully decoupled. This in itself is a good thing, however the things they were replaced with are yet another massive nerf. Hillock had all of his Item Quality crafts replaced with scarabs. Aislings veiled craft also got replaced with scarabs. Voricis craft white socket craft also got replaced with scarabs. So back with the old scarabs this wouldnt have been too big of a deal, but with the new reworked scarabs this had a huge impact on the viability of betrayal. The most sought after scarabs in the old system would sell at around 150c each. With scarabs like winged diviniation, winged strongbox and winged reliquary you had a decent profit off of scarabs. However with the new system most of the once pricy scarabs lost a lot of their value going to prices at around 40c. But that doesnt really matter at this point because you usually dont even get winged scarabs anymore. Now you would mostly get gilded scarabs even when syndicate members were Tier 4. Most of the gilded now being worth a couple of chaos orbs. The highly sought after veiled craft has now been shifted to be a drop from Catarina only. All of this together now causes betrayal to be utterly worthless in comparison to any other mechanic. If you dont get lucky and drop the veiled orb from catarina even with a maxed out syndicate board you are most likely only getting about 60 - 100c for a couple hours worth of betrayal encounters in maps. Now i dont see a reason for playing betrayal at all because the syndicate members dont matter. What matters is that you get to catarina as quickly as possible which is not fun. All the intricacy in betrayal is gone and all thats left is a husk of what betrayal was before this league. The main points that made betrayal fun for me was Consistency, and that my choices what to do with syndicate members mattered. I really hope Settlers of kallgur will improve betrayal otherwise i wont bother playing it. Last bumped on Jul 17, 2024, 3:59:10 PM
