POE2 "isnt that type of game" but could benefit from a "non gore" toggle
|
i watched talkative tri interviewing his wife whos apparently "new" to poe in general. she seems to enjoy poe and when asked what she would do if she was a dev, she said she would tone down the gore.
she simply mentally blocks the gore or else she might not want to play it. its a very interesting take, and it reminds me of how back when d3 started using vivid colour palettes it was met with a lot of criticism from the fans who say diablo is meant to be dark and gritty. i was one of those persons. but i m not longer that person. that was a long time ago. and now as i've changed i actually find its an interesting thing to ask for. what if GGG allowed players to toggle the amount of gore in game? for sure i LOVE the gore in POE/POE2 and its absolutely my jam. but what if we could turn a toggle off to make the gore reduced? personally i think this is an overall win. why? some people just cant stand gore, they feel queesy. my mom cant stand violence on the tele and physically winces seeing violence and actively turns to a different channel whenever she encounters it. i m not saying that my mom will start playing poe if theres a violence/gore filter but what i am saying is there is an untapped market of gamers/to be gamers that COULD fall in love with poe2. the potential is there. i bet a lot of us forummers are "ancient as the azemeri" now. some are parents, uncles and etc. wouldnt it be cool if you could play POE2 with more friends? your partner? or even your child? to clarify, i am NOT asking for POE2 to be have its gore and entire theme to be neutered into a PG friendly game for everyone. i want POE2 to RETAIN its gore and i would even prefer if POE2 was even more gory, BUT i want there to be an option to switch the assets to a "less gory/violent" version. instead of a boss ripping a guys head off and throwing it at a player, it could be a lump of rock. instead of a sea of blood with people drowning in it, perhaps just remove the people drowning and remove the incessant screaming. before you go saying "thats all additional resources, i would rather GGG allocate their resources to somewhere else", i would point out something interesting that many may have overlooked or forgotten. even in POE1, there is a "censored" version of the game. to operate in china, GGG made alternate models for the china client. it is... extensive, as they need to follow china's guidelines. since POE2 is likely to release in china, its very likely GGG is making sure to have "safe" alternate game assets for china. thus, all i m actually suggesting is to allow the international client to perhaps have that version of the game enabled by default, BUT players could simply go to option menu and enable ultra violence to enjoy POE in its full glorey. a win win no? this is how they did it in fallout 2. whenever i installed fallout 2, the first thing i would do is check the options and crank up the violence. POE2 is already shaping up to be more "player friendly". seeing how the streamers bring in their "non gamer" friends to try out POE2 and how most of them had a fun time was really interesting. GGG can cast a bigger net. more souls to trap and potentially more mtx money for them. then GGG can make more content for us everybody wins. also our chinese overlords will be happy too.
