ivory tower armor + eldritch battery does not allow ES to take chaos damage

Ivory tower armor says "Chaos Damage is taken from Mana before Life" and eldritch battery says "Energy Shield protects Mana instead of Life". Yet when taking chaos damage it bleeds out of mana without touching my ES and i die. Is this a broken interaction? The description does not match the effect IMO and now i have to rebuild my char.
Edit: It looks like chaos damage will retain its properties even after damage conversion and continue to ignore ES which makes more sense. But still, a disappointing tooltip omission. Why would i assume the qualities of chaos damage would supersede "protects mana". Protects mana sounds all encompassing to me so I find the eldritch battery tool tip misleading.
