Idea for PoE2: Z-targeting/lock-on?
|
Saw Ben's footage of him playing the PoE2 March-2024 alpha with Ranger and mouse-movement.
Saw a few moments where he did a lot of back-and-forth movement with his mouse as part of using the new "shoot while moving" feature that most ranged skills have. Thought of how to resolve that back-and-forth mouse movement so that mouse-movement players can smoothly perform "shoot while moving" stuff like strafing and kiting, which WASD can easily do. Then got the idea that PoE2 could implement Z-targeting/lock-on as one implementation. Idea 1: 1. Hover mouse over an enemy 2. Use a skill that targets AND repeats as long as it's held down (well, until you run out of Mana). OR 1. Use a skill that targets your cursor AND repeats as long as it's held down (well, until you run out of Mana). 2. The first enemy you mouse over while holding the Skill will be locked onto. 3. Now you can take your mouse off of the enemy and that skill will stay locked on to the enemy so you can use the mouse to move. Maybe this could be some "target lock-on" toggle alongside the "always attack in place" toggle that each Skill has in the skill bar. It gets finicky when you think about how this'd work with left-mouse skills. Do you just ALWAYS move towards your cursor if you're doing this with a left-mouse skill, or do you not move while your cursor is on the locked-on enemy? Running out of Mana will of course end the skill's lock-on (alongside ending the skill itself) Anyways, then I came up with Idea 2. Idea 2: 1. Hover mouse over an enemy 2. Press and hold the lock-on button (a la Z-targeting in 3D Legend of Zelda games, or in Metroid Prime) OR 1. Hold the lock-on button 2. The first enemy you mouse over while holding the lock-on button will be locked onto. 3. You always face the locked-on enemy and all skills you use will always target that enemy, or go in that general direction, as long as you hold the lock-on button. 4. If the locked-on enemy dies... you instantly face your cursor again and you have to manually lock-on to a new target (that or if you're holding the lock-on button and your mouse is already on a new enemy, you'll immediately lock onto that one). I don't think the game should automatically pick a new target for you, because sometimes what the game does for you is not what you want to do. This does put you at a disadvantage if you're using a left-mouse skill, since that'd always trigger and you can't move, but you can avoid that by not using the lock-on button. However, this can also be avoided if POE2 has it such that you can truly separate "move to cursor" and "use your 'LMB skill'" to two different buttons, so you can still have eight different skills visible in your skill-bar. Another trade-off is that Skills that incorporate movement - e.g. Whirling Assault, Escape Shot, Shield Charge, Puncture - are no longer influenced by your cursor, but by the enemy you're locked on to. But having some situations where it's better to not use lock-on works well with PoE2's emphasis on all your moves being situational - e.g. sometimes it's better to just run instead of using dodge roll (Subtractem praised one of PoE2's Act 1 bosses for teaching the player that lesson). As for WASD, they'd probably just avoid using Z-targeting. But that's fine since Z-targeting is meant to help mouse-movement players anyway. Also Idea 2 may also be implementable in PoE1 as well, maybe? More so than Idea 1 anyway. But yeah, that's what I thought up.
