Two questions from a newbie: Fire Fury and inventory
1 - Fire Fury, in "the Coast". Holy crap, I die so quick, not even sure how to approach it. Any hints on this one? I did attempt (3 times) at level 3, almost level 5 now, will probably return and see what happens.
2 - Inventory. I know you can purchase more tabs for your stash, but what about inventory? I barely (or don't) get through one "zone" (whatever they're called in PoE), and my inventory is already overflowing! Last bumped on Mar 15, 2024, 10:36:37 AM

1 Don't stand in her firestorm or burning ground.
2 Loot filter and don't pick up everything you see. Can't buy a bigger inventory Last edited by imanubcake#2671 on Mar 13, 2024, 2:33:19 AM

1. Kite, and you can get some Fire Resistance on your gear to help you take less damage.
2. Items with no mods (called Normal, coloured white) are usually not worth picking up. Rare (yellow) items can be upgrades for your character. If you're picking up enough that your inventory is full after a single zone then you might be picking up stuff that isn't going to be very useful. |

Agreed, I can see where skipping the base items makes sense, at some point. However, just starting out, with my first character, I need every bit of currency I can get from the vendors. As it is, I have just one Scroll of Wisdom left after my latest session. Once that improves a bit, I'm sure I'll be able to start skipping the base items.
One thing I just realized is, if I fill up, I can dump a base item that takes up 6 squares in the inventory, which makes room for potentially 2 or 3 other items which take up less room. And the base items seem to all pay the same amount, so might as well ditch the big ones :) |

^regarding inventory space and management:
Know that armourer's scraps and whetstones can be sold for wisdom scrolls. That is going to be your source of wisdom scrolls over selling white items for scraps. Your items don't need any sort of quality until much later as you will be switching gear out pretty frequently. It's generally good practice just to pick up all rares (yellow) when you are starting out to sell for transmutes and other currencies. They start to drop pretty frequently starting midway through Act 1, or even earlier. Magic items are almost entirely useless to pick up. Better to run with full white gear on your character and either replace with rares once they drop, or use essences on whatever you are wearing. Later as you get more comfortable, you completely stop picking up any item over 2x2 size: focus on rings, amulets, and belts. You will never drop a rare weapon or armor better than an essence-crafted weapon or armor, and you will get plenty of essences. Even just grabbing a single mod magic item from a vendor, and crafting another mod using your crafting bench is going to last you MUCH longer than any dropped item. Eventually.......you want to learn how to use an item filter. PoE has an issue with drop diahrrea that can be incredibly harmful to the new player experience. Fire Fury is an odd hard point, she's much more dangerious tha most things you'll run into by the time you see her the first time.
As to items, understand that you don't need to (and shouldn't) Identify every blue that comes your way. While it takes a touch of learning to figure out how to know what is and isn't worth identifying, a moment of consideration can save you scrolls. For example, if you're a wand wielding intelligence focused Witch, that big magic tower shield likely isn't going to get used, no matter how good it is. Just vender it Unidentified (or leave it on the ground). Stick to things you might use (in this Intelligence Witch, stuff with Energy Shield, wands, etc). Rares are generally value to Identify even if just selling them. Don't be afraid to sell Armorer's scraps, Blacksmith Whetstones, or Alteration Shards to pick up the slack if you need more Wisdom Scrolls or Town Portals (though waypoints will cover most portal needs in the early game if you're not speed running and can just take a bit of extra walking). And yes you're correct that an items size has very little to do with its value to venders (a fact I wish was fixed, wouldn't be hard to give +1 Wisdom Scrap to 2x3s!) As such those big swords and axes and staves often stay on the beach rusting. As to Fire Fury, staying mobile is key, her fire storm does a LOT of damage, so you need to exit the moment it starts (or preferably before once you notice the animation for its casting). Her Flame Dash ground effect is also pretty dangerious for a low level, and needs to be manuvered out of over all else. Otherwise use those potions, and if playing on a standard difficulty, you can always run back to town to refill flasks (or find some kills to top flasks off again). |

You don't need to kill Fire Fury, just run.

" Acutally this is a good point I didn't bring up, don't be too concerned about avoiding things that feel too rough, threat analysis is a skill the game wants you to have and use, particularly for some builds, there will be rare mobs that will dunk you right into the dirt, and making that snap choice of avoidance can make your life a lot easier, as in the lat points of the game, you only get a number of tries before the map is done (i.e a loss case), and even if you don't get there, every death is one fewer portal you could use to haul loot back. |

Good point about learning what enemies to avoid.
I did, however, go back last night, at level 6 (compared to level 4 earlier), and with all "armor" slots with at least something in them (except amulet). I also employed the stick and run approach mentioned above. Still died :) But had Fire Fury way down on life (probably 10% or so), so popped back at the nearby waypoint, ran back, and finished her off :) I like how the mob still has the same amount of life as when you dies, so hurrying back to finish them is actually an option. My previous long-term game has a totally different mechanic. Upon death, it several minutes til you can get back, after lots of annoying re-buffing, etc. And by that time, it's starting from square one all over again. This is much nicer! |
