Stop giving advantage to Ultrawide screens - it's bad design
This is the second league when playing on a wider screen gives players an advantage.
* The first one was Sanctum, where Ultrawide screen allowed to see guards which couldn't be seen on 16:9; * Now in Affliction, Ultrawide screens allow to see the white wisps, allowing us to stay longer in the Wildwood - leading to massive differences in juice. This is Bad Game Design. Imagine a situation where a person with a 4k 16:9 screen cold see 4 times (twice the height and twice the width) as much of surrounding terrain as a person using 1920:1080 screen. I think most of us would consider this an unfair advantage. Allowing people with Ultrawide screens to see more terrain on the sides is the exact same principle (albeit it gives less advantage than the hypothetical stated above). I can afford an Ultrawide. I just prefer a setup with 2 screens side by side. The optimal way to play the game in this league is to play in Windowed mode, shrinking the height so that I can see as much terrain as if I were playing on Ultrawide. This is seriously pissing me off - especially that it's the second time such a design decision was made. Having Ultrawide show more terrain and monsters in a typical scenario is fine. It becomes a problem when a new mechanic is severely impacted by visibility. Potential solutions (I like to be constructive): * do not make content where this is a huge issue * give players using normal 16:9 screens tools to level the playing field (e.g. this league showing white wisps and events on the mini-map) * limit the advantage the playing Ultrawide provides (e.g. this league it could have been done by fog-of-war in the Wildwood, so that Ultrawide screens do not show stuff further away from the player than a 16:9 would show) Last bumped on Feb 26, 2024, 4:50:13 AM

It's hard to disagree with anything here. In general, this whole concept of following wisps seemed strange to me from the very beginning, especially since they were barely visible in certain settings.

hoho they nuked ultrawides already. Leave us poor 21:9 enjoyers alone. If anything more games should start supporting these resolutions.
Also, what advantage? Lmao. |

The stuff I read on this forum...
Pff, who even plays Standard?

" don't rile them up with true information hoho " Sudden Fomo two and a half months into the league hoho Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

" The fact that I'm posting now instead of 2 weeks into the league is because I've been thinking of what I did and didn't enjoy about Affliction now that I'm about to quit the league. It's called Introspection ;) There is no FoMo - I am capable of resizing my window, learned it back around '94 as a matter of fact. |

I'm like 99.9999% sure that ultra-wide screens DONT see anything extra that every other screen sees anymore...
Am I wrong on that? There was literally a thread running for over a year complaining that 21:9 screens LOST their advantage. |

i dunno about widescreens but if you resize your window in windowed mode its like this

" And what else is this topic about if it's not fomo? There shouldn't be any need to open a topic with the upset demand to "Stop giving advantage" if it wasn't about the fear of getting less wisp or whatever else it could be in the future. Not hard to tell that you saw the AHK topic to resize your window here or on reddit, causing you to get offended and feel disadvantaged for not using a ultra wide monitor cause the few more pixel for sure do such a big difference hoho Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

" I guess it depends on how you understand FoMo. I understand it as FEAR. As in literally what the "F" in the abbreviation is supposed to be. Fear is not what I feel. What I feel is ANNOYANCE at game design forcing me to either: (1) play in 16:9 of my monitor, with amount of wisps collected smaller than if I resized my window, which in trade economy is sub-optimal way of playing the game (2) play in 21:9 window " (a) not offended but annoyed (b) I'm not disadvantaged for not using ultra wide monitor, because, as I've said, I can resize my window - my point is I shouldn't need to; (c) it is "such a big difference" because the way mechanic is constructed, wisp increases from say 9k to 10k translate to exponential increases in loot; which goes back to game design being the problem, which is my original point. If you don't think it's a big difference, you don't understand the mechanic. ============ It seems like people understand my post as "nerf these other guys". Which is simply not what I've said, at all. If you read my post (beyond thread title), it boils down to "design the game so that one's pc setup doesn't give inherent advantage." I don't even see how this is controversial. I'll give you an example of where PoE is very well designed in regard to somewhat similar problem: internet connection quality and ping. I live in a country where a consistent sub-30ms ping to PoE servers is easily available. I can happily play in lockstep if I want to. But PoE has a predictive mode, which allows people who live in areas where 200ms is the best they can get to play at nearly no disadvantage to myself. Which I think is great. |
