can anyone help clarify defiance banner for a noob? asking for a friend

once casted, it gains stages while around enemies..ok i get that. i mean, he gets that..do those stages remain until used again? or is there a certain time where they drop off? also, am i correct in assuming you should place it at spots like strongbox/essence spawns, or at a boss?

Banner charges are used up when you place the banner, which creates an area in which the effect persists as well as adding an extra bonus for its duration (says on the banner skill). When you use the skill again you start from 0 charges and have to build back up. Charges don't persist between areas / maps

Think of it as...

A Banner can have one of two statuses: you're carrying it or it's planted.

If you're carrying, it gives YOU an aura.

When planted, the Banner itself is the source of a different aura, with bonuses depending on the stages.

When to plant it depends on the situation. You might want the taunt against a tough mob or a pack that is too large to handle safely. Or you might want it to pull a pack into an area that better matches your aoe damage radius.
