Spell totems don't open chests with the caster mastery

I am using the caster mastery that has a 25% chance to open chests. But when casting shockwave totem, which has the spell tag, next to boxes it never opens them.

I think it should, shouldn't it?

No, summoning a totem doesn't count as casting.

Shockwave totem is a spell. Spell totem support is tagged with spell. Decoy totem is a spell. These are spells, they are cast, they should work with the caster mastery, they don't. Seems like a bug to me.

Summoning a totem is not spell cast. They have the spell tag so that it can affected by the proper things on the passive tree and whatnot.

This behavior is also reflected in the Guardian's block node. When you summon a totem you do not receive 25% spell block because the summon is not considered a spell cast.

Cast speed also not affecting the speed at which a totem is summoned is another hint too.

There were also bug reports about Fire Trap not activating the mastery despite the gem having a Spell tag. That is the same case: you can throw a trap or place a mine, but neither action is attacking or casting a spell.

Shockwave and Decoy totems are spell gems. But you don't activate them by casting, any more than you activate Ancestral Protector by attacking. You summon a proxy that will attack or cast a spell for you, depending on the type of totem you're summoning. And the summon time is based on Totem Placement Speed, not on Cast Speed or Attack Speed.

Since you summon totems for Ancestral Protector in the same manner you summon totems for Shockwave Totem, should the caster mastery activate when using Ancestral Protector?
