Explain "energy leech support" please?

This support gem leeches ES when used with a skill that hits. It does x% more damage when it leeches ES. Since it leeches ES by definition on hit, when does it NOT do that more bonus damage?

It has 2 modifiers. More damage when on full ES and more damage while leeching ES. Leech typically gets removed when you reach full ES so in a situation where you hit stuff with full ES you wouldn't get the "while leeching" damage bonus but the "on full ES" bonus instead. Exception to that would be trickster who has a node that says "ES leech is not removed on full ES" that would allow you to have both boosts at once making the gem really strong.

" I see now thank you. I hadn't realized the leech gets removed n full part. May I ask: if used while challening, and hit while challening, so that my ES fluctuates between full and not full, would the leech effect and its bonuses kick in or would I need to stop the skill use and restart? You don't have to restart, it's adjusted dynamically based on whether you leech or not.
