Clarifying "Nearby" with Metres
Now that distance has finally been given a somewhat concrete definition (insofar as "+0.2 metres" is easier to grok than "+2 to melee strike range. However, I think 0.2m still feels difficult to understand without a frame of reference; what defines a metre to an average player?), I think it is time that the keyword "Nearby" is revisited.
Currently, "Nearby" does not have a consistent definition. Master Toxicist's definition of Nearby is 1.5 metres, while Conduit's is 12 metres; this makes no sense! Nearby is all over the place, and it makes studying ranges and finding builds that work more difficult than it feels like it should be. I think a relatively simple change that would have a universal positive benefit would be to change all Nearby keywords to instead specify metre distance. Born in the Shadows now says "Enemies within 3.5 metres are Blinded", other Ascendancy notables say "within 6 metres", et cetera. 10/10 game would not recommend Last bumped on Sep 18, 2023, 4:59:35 AM

Bumping this thread because I believe that if we're gonna go a little bit, might as well go all the way.
It could be that it's a redundant request because GGG is already working on converting every "Nearby" keyword into metres, and Close Range and In Presence were simple, constant distances to test this change, but better safe than sorry. Also, "metre" as a unit is meaningless to most players without a decent frame of reference to base it off of. Moving hideout decorations displaces them by 0.1 metres, but to casual or new players, the connection between a metre and game units is unknown, and Melee Strike Range isn't easy to study in the heat of battle. To rectify this, it might also be prudent to add metre range to other ranged skills that require a target within a certain distance in order to used, such as default attacks for Wands or Splitting Steel. This would make it easier for players to get a feel for distance without having to look up external resources. 10/10 game would not recommend

I have told GGG about the "NEARBY" issue years ago but nothing. I think one of my older threads is from Dec. 2020 (but I think there is an even older one I couldn't find anymore)
It's in my QoL thread (I have added this thread to the list): https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3279646 GGG has made a great game with PoE but they are terrible when it comes to QoL features. “Human decency is not derived from religion. if they are honest, most men stand well over a meter.
a 6 foot 8 man very tall, is two meters tall. two meters is the height of a very tall man. a swing of 2 meters is pretty extreme, getting into nodachi territory. an absolute powerhouse is required for a two meter swing. not only well over 6 foot tall (limb lengths are linked to height) this man must also have several hundred pounds of muscle to weild it. marauder is a monster, but a shadow or a duelist cant handle the lenth of swing. the epee is a thin rapier designed for small men to jab up to 2 meters. its not a claymore. its like 20 lbs. just a long as hell dagger. |

Accurate scale isn't what I'm concerned about here; 1 meter is pretty obviously not related at all to a real meter, and is just a random measurement they chose.

" I would assume triple G kept the real distance of all skills/auras but just gave it another name. There is a wiki page that showcases the approx distance of ingane units (which will likely be transformed to metres in the upcoming leagues). https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Distance Masterpiece of 3.16 lore "A mysterious figure appears out of nowhere, trying to escape from something you can't see. She hands you a rusty-looking device called the Blood Crucible and urges you to implant it into your body." Only usable with Ethanol Flasks Last edited by gandhar0#5532 on Sep 18, 2023, 2:42:33 AM

This image comes from the wiki and can be translated to meters by cutting a zero since +1 strike range directly relates to 0.1 meters.
![]() https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Distance#/media/File:Poe-units-72.jpg Measured by the screenshot from the wiki 3 meter or 30 strike range seem to be the bare minimum for feels okay territory. At 40-50 starts the feels good territory for melee id estimate. Last edited by zzang#1847 on Sep 18, 2023, 8:18:01 AM
