Devour Support

Not gonna lie - as fun/amusing as Devour Support from the new teasers looks, it's absolutely fekkin' useless in PoE. It is so far as I can tell a nondamaging support, and while it recovers significant life if it pops a big enough pack, life recovery on kill is unsustainable in boss fights where you need it most.

But in Path of Exile 2, where support gems don't frequently offer damage, you have plentiful skills and links, and white monsters including boss adds don't restore flask charges...man. Having a clearing skill configured with Devour Support would be lit. Skillgem is hot donkey piss for the game it's in, but it looks excellent for the game coming up. Stuff like Devour Support is way cooler than just "HEER HAV MOAR DAMAJ"; anyone else hoping most/all supports look like Devour in PoE2 - or that Devour Support itself makes the jump?

What if…. and follow me here…. the support gems that they have displayed thus far have minimal damage aspects but offer a form of utility.

GGG has been known to shake things up…..

The reason we have only seen the numbers on two gems…..

Is because they are going to reveal that they have reworked support gems and they no longer have more/increased damage as part of the support.

Instead they may add some sort of flat damage that may scale to a gimmick.

Like fortify gem offers 2 to 9 physical damage per fortify stack.

Deadly Aliments adds a 322/sec chaos dot instead of a % to dot damage.

I just have a feeling….
This can be not so bad and find its use. Yes, for a regular zoom zoom softcore league, this is garbage. But for HC, HCSSF and Ruthless it is already more interesting, for a very strong sustain HP on maps. It will look especially strong in delve, constant sustain HP and destroying corpses, if it works like that, it looks very good.

I can't see this getting much use, too much opportunity cost on a gem link. You would have to significantly overgear the content you were farming to slot this in and if you were farming in that manner you wouldn't be playing melee really.

Has a few edge case uses though, maybe its got a small damage multiplier on it.

You might be on to something.
I remember in the past that MORE damage modifiers were extremely rare, increased less so and some skills didn't have damage modifiers at all.
Then, at some point, there was an inflation of MORE modifiers on many gems, because people were not using supports when they didn't have good damage modifiers.

Perhaps GGG are on their way to make more supports usable because of their actual effect instead of their damage bonus.
I just hope, if they do, that they don't forget to adjust the HP of rare monsters and some bosses.

Nah, it may have a place in PoE 1 too. As you say, "Having a clearing skill configured with Devour Support" fits perfectly into PoE 1. You don't need 28462 million damage to clear, and 'most' builds can clear just fine with one less damage support. I'm sure there are builds which will make use of it. Trickster sustain is very good, and now you can have it on all builds?

Don't get me wrong here; damage is still king - and PoE 1 should absolutely increase the damage on skills themselves and decrease the damage coming from support gems, so utility would be a better option. But to call it "useless" in PoE 1 because of "bosses", to then calling it "lit" in PoE 2 because of clear just doesn't make sense in my head.

Clearing corpses is significant benefit on top of recovering life/mana. Though probably some gem swapping as well.

I think its dead on arrival. There are plenty of options to clear corpses with way less opportunity cost and i don't see builds sacrificing a support gem slot to solve their recovery, especially not in such a lacking form that might just happen too late if you get hit before something dies and the gem triggers.
Absolutely useless to the point it's insulting.

Takes too long to get life back during fights - check
Can't be used against most bosses - check

Maybe good with indigon for mana, dunno.
