How does "chain support" work on bosses?

So, I'm wondering if the projectiles linked to "chain support" also hit more than one time the same target.

For example: if you have three targets on screen, a projectile will hit all the three (if they are in reach, obviously). But when there's only one target (let's say uber maven), will the projectile hit three times the same target?

No. If you don't have enough targets, it won't do anything other than take up a support link.
chain support can deal multiple hits on single target with dark pact, and can increase single target damage for arc but for most skills, it doesnt do anything on single target.

I see you have chain on your frostbolt, but frostbolt can't chain because it always pierces.

projectiles can only chain if they're out of splits, pierces and forks. a projectile that pierces everything can never chain.

Generally no, but there are some skills that can in effect hit the single target twice, and using AOE it is possible to overlap multiple times from a single cast/attack.

From the wiki:

"If a skill produces multiple projectiles, none of those projectiles can chain to a target which any of them have already hit. If a projectile has no valid chain targets, it will target a nearby enemy but pass through without hitting them."

As the poster above said there are some non-projectile skills that can chain to the same target. Arc can chain back after hitting 2 other targets, and also does extra damage based on remaining chains that aren't used.

AOE damage can also hit multiple times from single cast. Rolling magma can hit multiple times when in chains (in a straight line), but it's difficult to get multiple hits to overlap on one target.

Hydrosphere can be used with some builds to get extra hits on the boss but it gained a cooldown on how often it can occur recently.

Deadeye projectiles can also ricochet off walls which I think can hit single target multiple times with AOE overlap.

Lightning strike allows you to send out multiple groups of projectiles if you have extra strikes. My understanding is that these can chain to the same target (If they have something to chain off) because they are from separate groups. I believe it is possible to hit a target 2^n times with the projectiles from a single attack if you have n chains and they all hit n targets (uncertain). This is more useful for mapping, however its certainly possible to get at least two hits on a single enemy by targeting the ground next to it, having the projectiles and the extra strike hit the enemy.
