New player need help.

Hi guys.
I'm a complete newb. Just downloaded the game and got confused in the character selections. I can see tree options for the "Challenge Leagues"? menu. Which should I pick? What means if character dies it becomes a standard character? What's between characters that die and didn't die? Could some one help me figure it out please? Also would be great if some one can share a good resource where I can find a guide for a complete beginners. I've tried to google it but I got some very scary websites that is not beginner friendly. The current challenge league is about to end and the next one is going to start in a week.
So you are probably best off playing standard for now and if you want to, join the upcoming challenge league next weekend. Most players prefer to play leagues over playing standard, because thats where the new stuff and toys will be introduced. But for a newbie everything is new and there is so much to discover, you wont miss out on anything. |

The temporary league refreshes every 4 months. The current one is called Sanctum. It is ending in a few days, and a new league called Crucible will take its place afterwards, whereby everyone including myself will start with a clean slate (no character, no items, etc.).
The permanent league is called Standard, but we recommend you to play in Crucible when it arrives. Hardcore and Ruthless modes are designed for players looking for a more challenging experience. Hardcore Standard character dies --> becomes a Softcore Standard character Hardcore temp league character dies --> becomes a Softcore Standard character Softcore Standard character dies --> remains a Softcore Standard character Softcore temp league character dies --> remains a Softcore temp league character It is expected that a beginner will mess up their first few characters so just dive in and play. The subsequent characters that you build will become more efficient in progressing the campaign as you learn from the past mistakes. |

I cannot stress this enough.
On Friday, START A NEW CHARACTER IN CRUCIBLE LEAGUE. Playing a fresh account in standard is just too hard. Standard trade is dominated by rich folk, peeps who have accumulated wealth for years. Its fine to play in standard for a week, as a sort of tutorial, as the game is hard to learn. In fact, the game is SO hard for new players that for many leagues not I have been writing build guides for newbies. My current build guide for newbies is for Skeleton Mage Necromancer https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3351307 Even if you dont like minions, the 3rd post in the thread has a section with extensive hints for newbies. |
