Beginner Help
Hi everyone. First off, I'm a noob, if that isn't obvious. I really haven't played any of the diablo games, so I'm having some issues with the controls. Playing a Templar and even in the first real zone (non tutorial, I guess), I've gotten wiped a few times now. I understand this is going to take some practice, but is there a penalty for dyeing? Does anyone have any tips, to perhaps, make the controls easier for someone who isn't used to the point and click to move/attack, maybe in the Options? Especially for melee, I'm finding that my char is facing the wrong direction from the enemies when I'm attacking.
Anyway, I'm going to keep at it, but am hoping for something to ease the pain. Thanks for any assistance you can give! Last bumped on Mar 21, 2023, 12:40:56 PM

If you are having that much trouble, I would honestly recommend you play a much easier game first just to get used to an ARPG's controls before coming back to this. This game is pretty unforgiving even from the very start. It's perfectly fine to dive back into this game once you get a bit of practice like that.

Can you describe your ideal solution? What controls would make the most sense to you?
Personally, the 'hold down left-click to move, then point at the enemy and press right-click to cast/attack' was pretty intuitive. Not sure how you are managing to attack behind you. There is no penalty for dying in the early stages of the game, except of course that you have to respawn at the start of the zone/the last waypoint. |

I guess you are referring to "strike skills". (There is another category of melee called "slam skills".)
The remedy is in the form of two support gems: Ancestral Call and Multistrike. The former is a wasteful link against single-targets, but thankfully you can drop it once you have allocated that strike mastery node which allows you to hit an additional target.

I don't claim to be the most efficient player but since you asked us to share our setup: Left-click - Default is Attack+Move. Change to an instant skill such as Molten Shell, Vortex, war cry (if you took Call to Arms keystone which makes them instant), or Detonate Mines. You'd notice that your character still moves anyway as you click around. If you don't use any instant skills, set to just Move. Don't Attack with this button. Right-click - Set to your primary attack or spell skill. Enable Attack-in-Place so your character does not move when performing the skill. Middle-click - Disable the tilt/zoom feature. Then, if you have a secondary skill for fighting bosses and other single-targets, that goes here. Else, set to any vaal skill. Q - Set to a totem skill, or a curse, or the buff that you use most often. W - Set to a movement skill like Shield Charge. E - Set to a blink skill that allows you to jump through different elevations but have longer cooldown, like Flame Dash. R, T - Set to additional buffs or vaal skills that you use for boss fights. Ctrl+Q/W/E/R/T - Summon golem and activate auras Last edited by jeerinho#7997 on Mar 21, 2023, 1:18:06 AM

Jeerinho, I think that was exactly what I needed. I had the default left click to move and attack, which when it comes to ranged units, I would move there and it would issue the attack, but by then the ranged monsters wouldn't be there anymore. I think I need to use the Right click most since I didn't realize that was a stationary attack.
Thanks guys. Just more practice to get used to this. The games that would be most similar would be MMORpg's that I would play, so more used to using the keyboard to move, etc. This looks like a really in-depth game, so I'm trying to get into it. Not a hardcore player, just want to have some fun. :) |

You can set the Move action to be on any key on your keyboard, even your Spacebar, if that's what you wish. However, you still need your mouse cursor to guide your character's direction. This game isn't trying to be like modern MMOs. It is more like a spiritual successor of Diablo 2 so it plays similarly to that.
On top of that, the Left-Click is the only button that is able to perform an instant skill and move at the same time. IMHO these reasons alone make the Left-Click the better choice for move. |
