A different type of gameplay...?

Hello, everybody.

I was thinking of several RPG games about the character progression system. And, as I'm playing PoE... I got an idea of "What if...?".

What if PoE didn't have magic, rare, and unique items? What if a character's full potential comes from their skill tree, common weapons, gems, and support gems?

But... the points a character earns in the skill tree could be higher.
2x or even 3x. You could get an absurd amount of points, but with common items. (Your character would revert to the default amount of points when it became standard)

What do you think? I believe it could be fun. Pretty fun, actually.

I think people would get really bored really fast. What would be the point of grinding content?
Sounds terrible TBH. Regardless of how stingy PoE is with loot that's actually any good...killing lots of monsters and getting lots of loot for it is the draw of the genre. If the one and only objective in playing was to grind xp to get more skill points, people would abandon the game in droves.
I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German.
What if instead of grinding items, we grind skills? Skills that have the same stats as items, like magical, rare, and unique? Of course the prefixes and suffixes would be different from those of items, but it could provide different ways of interacting in the game.
Yeaa no.
