Lightning strike projectiles missing
Lightning Strike projectiles often seem to "miss" when they shouldn't. I'm not talking about missing the normal way (i.e. from failing the accuracy check), because this happens on my marauder with Resolute Technique, which means he should never be missing.
What I mean is that sometimes you can Lightning Strike at an enemy and projectiles will pass right over/through him, over and over again, but he takes no damage. It's as if the actual position of the projectiles is slightly different from where they appear to be on screen. When this happens, the problem never corrects itself unless you move a bit and try again. A very annoying problem for LS builds. Last edited by realatomicpanda#4303 on Apr 15, 2013, 1:17:04 AM

It's pretty much the same for any projectile. Probably sync related. I regularly get my projectiles (from bows and wands) to "connect" to an enemy, but no damage is delivered. Happens a lot on first hits on a pack. And sometimes it just goes through them until I move, like you described.

Lightning strike projectiles also have a slightly lesser range on angles they can be fired on, due to how their angle of spread is restricted. As such, in some rare cases, shift-attacking a particular monster will cause the centre projectile to fail to hit that monster, as it had to move on a slightly different angle than directly towards it. This generally doesn't cause a miss, but since the projectiles are quite small, that alight offset in angle means they're more prone to missing due to the enemy moving between you activating the skill and the projectile reaching them.

That's a reasonable explanation, but sometimes the result is that a monster could be standing a short distance away from you and you repeatedly shift-click on the monster and watch lightning bolt after lightning bolt pass through the monster for zero damage.
Even if it's not necessarily a bug with lightning strike, it feels very buggy, and a change to the mechanics that prevents this from happening would be a good thing. I suppose that simply increasing the size of the LS projectiles might solve the issue but will also create a new (and equally annoying) problem of the projectiles getting stuck on doorways much more often. So I'm not sure precisely what the best solution is. But I don't think shift-clicking on a monster with a ranged attack and Resolute Technique should ever result in complete inability to hit that monster. Perhaps some kind of check could be performed when the mouse is directly aimed at a monster to ensure that the projectile's angle toward that monster is corrected if necessary. |
