Empty Trove affliction

So I got this wonderful thing somewhere on floor 1, and now that I've defeated the boss on floor 2 I can't even select the two Offer rewards because they cost 5 coins.

You can't use fountains, etc. It's sort of silly, especially when you can kill a bunch of monsters without them dropping a coin. I've killed almost everything in 6 rooms including the two statue bosses and I'm a 0 coins here at the end of the floor.

Is this intended? Because it seems like that your run is basically over if you get that affliction too early, which is a shame considering this is a really fun league mechanic, even at lower levels.
