Wrath of the Cosmos feels punishing

It rewards glass cannon builds who don't mind using 6 portals every map and punishes people who want to play a balanced character and get to higher levels. I'm level 97 and want to go further, and although I'm fairly tanky there's no way I could take this and not die since it's basically 100% increased damage taken near the end of maps. On the other hand, I feel forced to take it because the difference is simply massive. Why can't we have something on the other side of the tree for the people who want to utilize a more defensive approach?

You get potentially insane returns on it. Of course it feels punishing if you take more than you can handle.

That's the point, pretty much no build can handle 100% increased damage taken, so it's best to go glass cannon

There are builds that won't struggle with 100% damage taken, any character that did well in Scourge is likely fine and not all of those are glass cannons.

Tbh I think its supposed to feel punishing, its one of the highest value keystones on the tree I even take it on HC. I just don't use 4 alters i'm not quite that brave :p

I get that it feels like it rewards glass cannons the most btw but you need to zoom out with that perspective as you'll find the game universally rewards glass cannons willing to use 6 portals. It isn't in any way restricted to wrath of the cosmos and is more of a fundamental design.
If you want xp, opt out. If you want the extra reward be prepared to lose some xp. I prefer having the choise rather getting it forced upon me like AN xD
If you deal decent damage, take it in addition to Wellspring of Creation to mitigate some of it.

But yes the rewards are insane. I take it alongside Eldritch Gaze and when I get an eldritch currency alter, I walk out of the map with like 40 Grands.

The Wrath of the Cosmos Keystone encouraged players to risk a level of danger that was outside their capability because of how valuable its rewards were. In some cases, it made more sense to die a few times per map than forgo the level of rewards this keystone offered. This is not ideal, to say the least.
