The game prompted me to change my main character's name to something else. It says the name expires after a year of inactivity or other circumstances. But my other characters which I rarely use have their names kept. So what happened there??? I had that name for yearrssss and I lost it...

Hiya,
You are correct - after a year of inactivity character names can be expired by our system - in this case you should be able to reset the name at the character login screen.
If the name the character had previously has not been taken by another player you should simply be able to use the same name again, if it has been taken unfortunately you will need to choose a new name for said character.

I ran into this today trying to re-use an old character name. It's weirdly disappointing.
Why do character names need to be unique? Why can't a character simply have a GUID or similar assigned to it, and the name is purely decorative? This seem like a legacy from the design book of: "this is how it's always been done" and unfortunately every gaming related system seem to suffer from it. Is there a good reason for this that I'm missing? If not, can this be a feature request for PoE 2?
