Dying instantly with chaos inoculation and full energy shield

So I just swapped to chaos inoculation, but I am getting hit with something that's going through my energy shield, because despite having 3.6k energy shield, I'm dying. I can't figure out what's killing me, but it's happening even on low level zones including on the coast in act 1. Am I missing something?

EDIT: I seem to be taking damage when I hit mob packs with absolution, but I can't figure out why. I also seem to die when hit by any elemental damage, which seems to be going through my energy shield.

One of your rings has "Lose 26 life per enemy killed". As a CI character, you have no life to spare.
