Cruelty with Poison Trap interaction

I got a mechanical question regarding cruelty support. Apparently the traps get the buff, if supported by the gem, but it doesn't do anything because the DoTs count as mine (on kill effects work etc.). But what if I get the cruelty buff from another source? Would it add dot multi to the trap if it's supported by a cruelty gem as well?

From the wiki: "Traps, Mines, and Totems can gain Cruelty; however, because their damage is based on the player, these buffs have no effect. The player will need to have the Cruelty buff from a skill they dealt damage with directly, as well as support the proxy with Cruelty Support to gain the damage bonus for damage over time."
