Why are my character names being taken?

Hi.
I have lost countless character names over the last 2 years and most recently had one taken from me that I used for the Endless Heist event. The character was not deleted in this process, but the name was stripped from them and replaced with an arbitrary collection of letters  Clearly I don't randomly give my characters garbage names like this, so what's the deal with it getting stripped from me when I was planning to use it at League start?
