Scaling damage from Smite

I've been planning a character around smite and one thing im unsure of is, which type of damage should I be scaling, provided I have a full conversion to lightning?

Another question that bothers me is,if all my phys damage is converted, do I still get a bonus from mods such as gain x% of phys as y element?

Thanks in advance :)

yes you still benefit from phys as extra of <type>

So if I aim to benefit from gain % I should scale phys? The number on the phys damage pre conversion?
Since Smite itself grants added lightning damage, and you probably want to run Herald of Storm and/or Wrath, I guess %increased lightning damage will be superior to %increased physical.

Besides, if you benefit from any form of "% of physical damage as extra lightning", you'll want to add flat physical damage to attacks. However, due to the values of flat lightning damage being much higher, it may be more interesting to directly scale lightning and forget about investing heavily in flat physical.
Both will benefit you. I'd use PoB to check exactly how much each particular source benefits you. I wouldn't worry about only scaling one, just evaluate each on a case by case.

Thing is, the pathing on the tree doesn't go all that well for scaling both, I've been contemplating either a CI elementalist, or a life based inquisitor, templar does offer a better access to phys nodes while elementalist is better at, well, elements.

Staying "pure" one or the other doesn't inherently grant a bonus over scaling both. I'm not saying go out of your way to get sources of both. But if you path near something, just check whether it benefits more before taking it. Same with equipment--if you find something that gives one or the other just check which is actually stronger.

If the scaling choice will determine your build, just mock up a few PoBs (one for each option) and see which one ends up better overall.
