How exactly do expeditions work?

I met Gwennen in one of the areas in Act 6. She mentioned something about expeditions; after I helped her with placing explosives, I can see her now both in the town and in my hideout.
The question is, how exactly do expedition work and, most importantly, how do I join them or start them? Someone mentioned in general chat that I need to talk to Danning (sp?), but where do I find him?
Please bear in mind that I've been only playing for a few days, so I probably won't understand any references to things that may be obvious to those who played previous leagues.

They have a chance to appear randomly in the storyline at a certain point. You cant force spawns of them until you get to maps and use scarabs but that's probably getting a little deep for someone brand new to the game.

Just know they pop up randomly and you have no control over when they pop up right now.

And looking at a youtube video is probably the best bet for learning the mechanic. But at its basic you place explosives to summon monsters and if the boxes that have a positive modifier for monsters and also a positive modifier for your drops are in the range of the explosions, every spawned monster after that gains the benefit of the box (ie chance to block attack and spell damage) and also your drops get the benefit of the box too (ie 50% increased quantity of items found).

The big lesson there is that some boxes will give monsters immunity to a certain damage type. So if you are a cold only damage dealer avoid triggering boxes that makes monsters immune to cold damage.

There is a bit more to it which will be better explained in a video than I personally could here but thats the basics of it.

After you place the explosives you just go back to the npc and there's a thing you can interact with to blow them all up. These events are random and can start appearing after act 6. The only way to actually confirm that the area will have expedition encounter is with a scarab or logbook.

Sometimes you can find a logbook as a drop from expedition monster which you can then bring to Danning in your hideout. Then you'll just pick one of the areas it has and go ham with the explosives.

There's 4 expedition NPCs and you'll meet them randomly. So just keep going and don't worry about it too much.
