Incredibly basic question about the skill tree

Hello!

I am a certifiable noob when it comes to POE, but for the life of me I cannot find an answer to this question despite all of my searching.

Some builds I've found have a skill tree where there is a solitary node selected all by itself (away from any other nodes selected) and I have NO idea how to obtain that.

Is it from an item? A gem? A quest reward? An Ascendency reward?

In essence, how do I select a notable passive skill that is all by itself on the skill tree?

Thanks so much for any and all assistance. :)

you are probably seeing something called an Annoint.

certain uniques, along with Amulets, can be 'annointed' with oils from the blight league mechanic. this allows you to obtain a specific notable, anywhere on the passive tree, without pathing to it.

my amulet gives me 'deflection', which is in the south southeast area of the passive tree, which i am nowhere near.
Ah - that must be it. Thank you so much! Was wracking my brain over this for too long. :)
there *are* also jewels that let you allocate passives without pathing to them, but those jewels have a range.

intuitive leap lets you allocate stuff thats close. but it can save you a couple passive points.

thread of hope, has a variable zone (and downside), that lets you get passives farther away, but still in the vicinity. can be very powerful.

but neither of those will let you take something clear across the other side of the passive tree, like anointing does.
That's good to know. The build I found (Summoner Witch) has the Decay Ward selected, which is several nodes away without pathing - so it may be a jewel, or an anoint.

Again, thank you for your help!
Edit: Yep - just checked Path of Building, and it is an anoint on the amulet. :)

Thanks again!
