Tainted fusing orb WTH?

So I have a 5 link chest. I purchased fusing orbs to try for 6 links.
Every fusing orb reduced my chest by a link until I hit zero links. On my last try I went from zero and stayed at zero links!
Is this RNG or a bug? How can it do this?

It doesn’t say each outcome is equally likely.

I’m 2 for 2 on 6-linking a 5-linked with a tainted fusing. But I’m like 0 for 10 on 6-linking through the scourge crucible.

Afaik you can't drop below 4 links on high iLevel items. Maybe I'm getting confused with number of sockets though.

FYI if there are NO links on the item DO NOT use tainted fusing on the item, I learned the hard way, it will just throw them away lol. I guess cause there isn't anything to work with. so 50% more or 50% less of 0 is still 0, I just assumed that wouldn't be a thing.. Sadly I was mistaken, if I can save someone else the headache hopefully you won't throw any at a 4 socketed pair of boots like I did trying to make something happen.. Cheers Exiles

Idea is to 4L it with the bench, then try until you hit 6. If you fall below 4, 4L it again.
