What is Basic Jewel Socket for?

I got a jewel that can be "place into an allocated medium or large jewel socket". I see a bunch of Large Jewel Sockets in the tree, but what are the Basic Jewel Sockets for?

they can go in *any* jewel socket. cluster jewels require specific sockets, which are only found on the outer edge of the passive tree.

You have base jewel, abyss jewels, and cluster jewels. Base jewels (cobalt, crimson, viridian) can be placed in any allocated jewel socket on the passive tree. Abyss jewels (ghastly, hipnotic, searching, murderous) can be placed in any jewel socket an are the only jewel that can be placed in gear. Cluster jewels (large, medium, small) can only b placed in the outermost jewel sockets on the tree. These create additional passives that include jewel sockets, an only a smaller cluster size can be placed inside a cluster jewel.

What you have sounds like a small cluster jewel. This can be placed inside either a large or medium cluster or into the outermost jewel socket on the passive tree.
