Black Screen Crashes

Over the past day I have started getting black screen crashes which require a restart; the screen goes black, the fans kick up very high and I cannot do anything with the PC.

It started in delve and occurred after being in there for about 15 minutes or so. The frequency of crashes has increased throughout the day with less than 10 minutes between crashes and some being almost instant after re-entering a map following a restart.

GPU temps were around 59 and power between 160-185W at the time of the crashes.

I have verified the integrity of the game files on steam, re-installed the game and re-verified them yet the issue persists. Any advice would be appreciated.

My PC specs are as follows:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4Ghz
RAM: 16GB
MoBo: B450 GAMING PLUS
GPU: Asus Strix Vega 56 8GB
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 80+ GOLD 550W, fully modular

What is the temp on your CPU when this happens?

Between 70 and 75. There is no jump in any CPU or GPU metrics from looking at them in the Radeon Performance Metrics just before the crash.

sounds like a hardware failure of your graphics card.

it might be that only poe triggers this cause it's very demanding when it comes to the gpu.

make sure your power supply is working and is reliably supplying power to your gpu.

use hwMonitor to check the voltage over time to see if it drops. underpowering devices can be very dangerous.

i lost a gtx570 the same way, it's been overclocked by the manufacturer but they did the mistake of not increasing the voltage the card gets.

this led to a permanently increased current flow in the card that destroyed the gpu in one year.

which was also one of the reasons i got kicked from alpha cause i couldn't reliably play at that time.

Yeah looks like it is a hardware issue, used gpu-z to look at temps and the hotspot it hitting like 106 when the card is at 45. Seems like that's the issue, appreciate the help.
106°C isn't unusual for a gpu.

remove it and check the graphics card after making sure the fan works:

* is the cooler sitting properly?
* remove dust from the cooler
* did you remove all plastic protection foils from the card before inserting it into the computer?

last point is funnily one i did wrong myself, there is a big metal plate for additional cooling on the backside and the foil on it wasn't really recognisable.

A slight necro-post, but this is the first Google result for "path of exile black screen", so I will tell you what I did to solve it.

I was experiencing many black screen crashes per day. Tried a bunch of different things to no avail. Threads like this suggested the video card might be failing, so I started thinking about downclocking the video card. I installed MSI Afterburner, and...

**FLASHBACK** Long, long ago, in 2015 when I got my Nvidia 980 Ti video card, I applied a an overclock, tested it out thoroughly and found it to be completely stable. MSI Afterburner sets up the overclock so that it stays around even if you later remove Afterburner.

Eight years later, I reinstall MSI Afterburner and find the overclock is still there. I'd completely forgotten about the overclock, and apparently either the video card or the power supply (also eight years old) can't quite handle it anymore, because these things do wear out over time.

Removed the overclock and put it back to factory values, and I haven't had a crash in a week of playing PoE.
