Why spell damage cannot leech mana

I've searched many items and gems and can't find "Spell damage leeched as mana" affixes. One hint from Mana Leech Support indicates its "Spell damage leeched as mana" functionality been removed in 3.8.0. But why? Spells always cost more mana to use than attacks, and in nowadays most if not all attack builds use -mana cost/lifetap to work around mana issues which rendered the Mana Leech gem virtually useless in any builds. I don't very much understand the logic behind this.
Two-handed - Mop
Dual Wield - Slippers
One-handed & Shield (close combat) - Brush & Basin
One-handed & Shield (ranged) - Hair Dryer & Mirror
Main-hand & Off-hand (evil witch) - Sponge & Soap

This was outlined in the Blight balance developer manifesto, "Mana for Spellcasters" headline.

Thanks I'll read this...
Two-handed - Mop
Dual Wield - Slippers
One-handed & Shield (close combat) - Brush & Basin
One-handed & Shield (ranged) - Hair Dryer & Mirror
Main-hand & Off-hand (evil witch) - Sponge & Soap
And the Essence Extraction notable and Arcane Surge are gutted in this league...
Two-handed - Mop
Dual Wield - Slippers
One-handed & Shield (close combat) - Brush & Basin
One-handed & Shield (ranged) - Hair Dryer & Mirror
Main-hand & Off-hand (evil witch) - Sponge & Soap
If you are a lightning caster there is still the lightning damage leeched as mana watchers eye. But ya spellcaster mana leech is very hard to come by nowadays.

Pretty sure that's a legacy mod. Still exists in Standard though.
I think GGG changed it to Energy Shield leech at one point, probably during Blight as well.

OP, how about the Shaper's mod on rings? - "Mana gained for each Enemy Hit by your Spells"

So far, I'm fine with just using enduring mana flask lol
Ill be damned it is legacy. Well scratch that one then.
You can use blood magic or get mana regen. Maybe eldrich battery for mana costs. But mana leech is gone.
Yup Eldritch Battery is the way to go if you dont want to go MoM.

Devouring Diadem Has EB baked in and also triggers ES recharge frequently, combined with Wicked Ward its pretty much all you need for easy ES sustain.

ES leech gem also helps as dmg support as well as for ES sustain, while also allowing you reserve all your mana and even go MoM as long as you do have enough ES to make it viable option.

There are ways to build around this issue and completely ignore mana costs.

If you do not take damage from mana before life (whether that is due to Mind over Matter or another mechanic), the ES recharge will not be interrupted if you use Eldritch Battery, so you do not need Wicked Ward. If you have any ES leech or regeneration, Wicked Ward will lower your sustain for no benefit.

Wicked Ward is only useful in conjunction with Eldritch Battery if you take damage from mana before life.

It is worth noting that if you take damage from mana before life, the ES recharge will be interrupted even if you have Divine Flesh.
