Launcher crashing every time
|
Hello,
I've had a problem with POE ever since I've been trying to play it. Pretty much every time I start the game, the login screen loads perfectly. however, as soon as I click any button, the launcher immediately crashes, and I get the generic Windows message "Client.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I have actually only been able to play the game once. The one time I was able to log in, I really loved the game, and I would love to play it again. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play it since. I've re-installed and re-patched twice. i've done a pack check and the result was "no errors." Is there anything I can do to get around this and play the game? Thanks! |

need more details of the actual error.

I wish I had more details, but I'm at a loss on this one. I'll try to explain the error better:
Each time I open the game, I see the loading screen, and then the launcher appears. The animations are running in the launcher, so I know it's not frozen when it loads up. Then, if I click any button at all (Login, Options, etc. -- I even tried the microtransactions store link and the Lost Password link), the screen goes black for a moment, and the launcher crashes with one of those generic error boxes that Windows XP displays when a program closes for an unknown reason. Here is the exact text of the error: _____________________________ Client.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please Tell Microsoft About This Problem We have created an error report that you can use to send to us. We will treat this information as anonymous and confidential. To see what data this error report contains, click here. ______________________________ The dialog box has two buttons, "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send." This is really all I know about the error. As I said, there was one time (and only one time) that I was able to click buttons on the launcher, and I was able to log in and play the game. I received this error several times before that, however, and every time since then. It just seems odd that no one else is having this issue.... I play several AAA games, including SWTOR and HoTS, so it can't be a performance issue. The one time I was able to play PoE, the performance was excellent at full graphics settings. Any ideas? |

there should be a way to get more details on the error. that error is way too generic to get anything useful from.

I've got a bit more info. I believe the launcher is actually crashing the first time it tries to play a sound. I checked in the Client.txt file in the logs folder, and every time the crash happens, this bit of text is added to the log:
2013/04/07 17:55:39 ***** LOG FILE OPENING ***** 2013/04/07 17:55:40 1628750 107 [INFO Client 4084] Send protocol version 2013/04/07 17:55:40 1628781 16b [INFO Client 4084] Web root: http://patchcdn.pathofexile.com/0.10.4.7/ 2013/04/07 17:55:40 1628781 16c [INFO Client 4084] Backup Web root: http://patch222.pathofexile.com:8095/patch/0.10.4.7/ 2013/04/07 17:55:40 1628781 177 [INFO Client 4084] Requesting root contents 1 2013/04/07 17:55:40 1628843 19f [INFO Client 4084] Got file list for "" 0 2013/04/07 17:55:40 1628843 1fc [INFO Client 4084] Finished checking files 2013/04/07 17:55:40 1628984 2e [INFO Client 4084] OpenAL device is "Generic Hardware on C-Media Wave Device" 2013/04/07 17:55:40 1629000 62 [WARN Client 4084] Failed to create audio context with at least 16 sources It looks like as soon as it tries to play a sound (probably a button click sound), the launcher crashes because it fails to create an audio context with at least 16 sources. Is there anything I can do about this? Maybe download new drivers? Thanks again |

try launching with -ns or --nosound added to the end of the shortcut. see if that makes a difference. if so then you'll know that is the problem. if not then it isn't a sound problem.

Well the -ns and -nosound didn't help, but I did find out something new.
The game randomly worked for the second time yesterday (after today's patch it's back to not working). I noticed yesterday that the launcher actually had background sound and music, which I had not heard before. So now I know that if the launcher plays background sound and music, that the game will work, but if the launcher has no sound, then it will crash as soon as I click anything. Has anyone else in the whole world had this problem besides me? I'd really like to play PoE, but I'm sure I'll get bored of the bullcrap soon and just move on. Thanks |

It is a little late. I hope the threat is not dead, but same here :c
Is there any solution? thanks!!! |

at a guess i would say perhaps a bad chunk of data got passed throu while patching.
try a full delete / reinstall of the client sock account
