How did Chris Willson start GGG?
I know he is rich now, but where did he get money to start the company back in 2013, and what were their first offices?
Did he sell caught fish? Last bumped on Aug 26, 2021, 9:32:48 PM

I have heard some rumors that he (with some friends) were RMT in D2. I know that are just rumors but if you google it you will find a lot articles for selling D2 items for real cash.

" Have you hear Chris talking about D2? If you had you would be pretty sure he didnt farm stuff to rmt. Edit: Also i have never ever heard of this rumor, no idea where you get that from. (There were [are?] rumors that they are involved in poe rmt but it would be hard to start a company with that as it needs to have the game first. [Also these rumors are most certainly wrong. Look at how much the game itself is making, they wouldnt need to resort to such things.]) Last edited by jersch_#2179 on Aug 24, 2021, 3:53:26 AM

" Well then ask yourself this question --> Of all the RMT's shops for PoE, one could sell ALL items and currency seconds after new L went live. How is that possible ?? (this has now been "stopped" after several people proven this). There is also this little gem --> https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2092913/page/1 |

" I dont know how fast or for how much rmt sites sell poe stuff because i have never visited one. I did read that thread in its time and while i dont think its great that it happened you have to be reaching to say if someone who owns a rmt site buys GGG shares that GGG is surely involved in this. Yes, it is not completely absurd (as i would like this idea to be) but it still seems kind of unlikely. As i said their game generates a lot of revenue, also do explain to me how poe got financed by rmting poe items? |

They crowd sourced it.
I imagine initially they just started writing code. That costs nothing. I don't know if they had other jobs at first, but it seems likely. When they started running into expenses beyond their means, they crowd sourced it. They pre-sold MTX and apparently sold quite a bit of it. It's the Internet. Somebody out there will throw money at just about anything. |

There were some serious whales early on. $1000 to design a unique. $1000 for a diamond kiwi pet. Lots of little things as well too like $5 beta key's eventually.
And a select few donated a lot. Like a lot. A lot a lot. |

Wish i dontated more than $5 to get into beta.
If i recall, he started in the garage using everything he had and leveraged his future to get POE started. I will always respect chris for taking a chance, he landed the orb on a leather belt. Also for the way he handled cheaters in beta, didnt delete them or ban, instead took the input constructively instead of defensively. Just renamed their chars appropriately :D I remember him first from a2, before "da vaal" was made. He asked why ppl didnt like the game, grass root like. |
